A long awaited cast on

Alright, I did it, I finally fell into the clappie whirlpool. I've only had the pattern printed off since it came out on Knitty. I think that's almost 5 years ago now. My first official clapotis has finally been cast on. I'm using Kona fingering yarn & a 6 needle hoping for a nice, light fallish finish. It's very fall colored, a little too bright on the orange, but I'm hopeful that it will chill out as I knit on.

Have lots of little finished objects to share when I get around to uploading them all.

Yes, yes I did! For my friend Kellie. Her shower is tomorrow. I'm squeaking under the wire tonight. My first try at fondant. I could try & put a bunch of doo-dads on it, but I'm too scared to screw it up. It's fine the way it is as far as I'm concerned. No one else would have tried to make this. She makes kick ass cup-cakes for the kids at school every single month for their birthdays. She deserves something special.

The kids needed a couple of caps , so the last 2 days I cranked out these two LTK Braided Caps. They have lots of hats, but we're headed out on a little family adventure in a warmer climate, but may be windy, so they needed something snug, but if it cooled off, would warm them right up. Made with Lamb's Pride worsted. Easy peasy & fast, fast, fast. I added the nubs on the top per request from my kids. They always have funny do-das on their hats. Easy to spot them in a crowd too!

And that may be the last of my updates for the year unless what's on the needles now is finished despite my festivities. :-P

The Ultimate Socks

The Toirneach Kilt Hose are FINISHED!!! And yes, my dh has little tiny ankles. I started them with no problems, really, but got very, very scared. I made modifications suggested in the pattern to customize the hose & they worked. I can't hardly believe it! Fit Dh to a "T". Now if I could only get to work on his kilt, he'd think life was pretty good. LOL I made the decreases down the calf harder than they really were. Once I figured out I was doing it all right, it was no problem & they worked up very quickly. The first sock took months & months, the second took 3 days I think. Perhaps less. I am so pleased!

Socks for Christmas

I decided to tackle my fear of socks in a big way this winter & make socks not only for my own children, but for a friend who does so much for me here, always has a smile & a helping hand, and always has a moment. Her son's are the variegated pair. A friend of hers hand spun & dyed the yarn, and I provided the socks. My kids' are made with peace fleece. All were made from the Children in Common Socks pattern. Dd's were modified to be knee socks...very tricky yardage to get it all finished correctly & without knots in the toes. Yikes!!!

It's been something like 26 years since we first corresponded, and finally, we will meet for the first time. I wanted to make her something she could use and would remind her of the warmth her friendship has given me all these years. The colors aren't quite right because the sun is nowhere to be seen today, but you get the gist of the richness of the yarn. It's the Berry Hill fingerless mitten in space dyed BFL superwash (wonderful stuff). I hope she loves them!

Lookie here! I sewed something that wasn't a curtain or a repair for the first time in what seems like a million years. I've dewebbed and dusted the machines & I'm off & running. My first Ottobre attempt. I've been gettting the magazine for several years now, but hadn't gotten past tracing patterns (which the kids have outgrown now & I'll have to retrace again). It was all too daunting. This is from 3/2007, number 16, the recycled dress size 80 cm. Well, none of the material here is recycled, but it is well marinated in my stash. It's for a dear friend's daughter who is turning 1 today. I felt guilty for not getting dresses made for both my neices who also recently turned one, so someone had to get something. It's freshly pressed & ready to be delivered to it's recipient.

One more finished project.

I present...Zaftig!I started this two years ago, even did the single crochet edging...all it needed was the elastic & to be blocked decently. I knew I didn't want the ribbon. Why I took so long, well, all the other fellow ravelympians can attest to that answer.
Is this elastic not so perfect? I think so! v :-P

Knit, of course, with Cascade Fixation. Not nearly as difficult as I expected to knit with.

I do so love this pattern. Now that I have finally finished one, I will make more. Perhaps lengthen the band and make it a cami.

Splash & all it's idiosyncrasies is done.

The stripe is not quite as visible in real life, but with that flash, holy crap Batman! If dd cared, I would change it, but she doesn't. She just can't wait to put it on. She was so excited to see I had cast off that she offered to help with the I-cord. Don't know if that's considered cheating. :-P Her help didn't last long when her brother got on the computer & she decided he needed help playing his game.

I'm not entirely happy with this yarn. It pills and sheds really easily. It was stash yarn & out of the clearance bin so I don't feel too terribly bad, but I am about done with chenille yarns. I'm a sucker for their softness, but man, the end result doesn't last nearly long enough to make me happy enough to use it again and again. I'll use what I have, but no more.

It's great to have this done. I might be able to pull one or 2 more wip's out for the final day tomorrow. We'll see.

Life got in the way again & I'm behind on posts, but I have been knitting a little every day if it kills me. It cracks me up to see the strip in the brown of the skirt. Honest to God you can't see it looking at the yarn in regular light. I haven't looked at it outside & no, I didn't bother to look at the ball bands. It brings me a laugh anyway. I'm finishing this last repeat of the pattern & then going to the ribbing. If all goes well I could be done tonight. Don't count your chickens.

Well would you look at that, the brown is more than one shade! Never noticed that before. I've had these yarns in my stash for 4 years roughly, never noticed the subtle color change until this picture. Now that I look I can see the change start in the last picture, but I didn't see it knitting this up before. I can't see it in the house today either. But it's glaringly clear in the picture. I would probably show in the sunlight better, but not on a rainy day in the house. I'd be more wrapped around the axle if it wasn't a fun dress up gift for dd. It's not a rip out event. It is funny though. It's a Stash Splash!!

No picture today. I didn't feel like I made enough progress on Splash to justify a pic. Life changed some yesterday so less time to knit. That's life in the military. Adapt and overcome.

On the upside, my stash is slowly disappearing. It's good to have room in my totes to move yarn around & have lots of room to spare. They used to be packed to the hilt & barely allow the tops to snap on let alone stay. Not that I wouldn't like to fill the totes, but I promised myself I would use much of what I have to make room for new, not just make room for new. I don't have the room here to just buy because I want to. Can't say the same for my pattern queue on Ravelry. It just grows ever longer as I see people's beautiful finished projects. But it's those hand spinners/dyers who are not helping me!! Gorgeous stuff!!!

Amazingly enough, I didn't get as much done as I wanted yesterday, but I did cast on for the picky pants & knit to the short rows before I went to bed. I only knit a few rows of the Splash yesterday, so no real noticeable progress to actually photograph.

It's not much, but there were many distractions & considering Opening Ceremonies were in the afternoon, didn't leave me much time. I started on a WIP (work in progress). It's the one that will require the most work, I think anyway. I tore K's Splash from New Knits on the Block all the way back to just the tail, added 40 more stitches to the skirt cast-on and continued on. I see where I messed up a stitch or two forgetting to change colors in the right place, but honestly, it doesn't make a difference. It doesn't upset me that much.

I'm beyond insane to think I can compete with the amazing people at Ravelry who are all participating, but I'm going to try and do my best for my teams: Team Hopelessly Overcommitted (HO for short lol) and Team Little Turtle Knits (LTK). I have the advantage of being in a timezone where I get a few hours to wake up, do a few errands & then start knitting in earnest! I lose out on a few good knitting hours though.

Adventures in Kool Aid dyeing

I've not been brave enough to dye anything I've made yet. I drool over other people's creativity & long to do the same. I thought I needed to have all the expensive & fancy dyes, but I decided to delve into Kool Aid creating instead.

I'm playing along with the Ravelry one skein challenge for July & this is my market bag. It's the Saturday Market Bag from Strings and Yarn or as a Ravelry download.

I modified it a bit as I went along. I cast on 90 instead of 2 separate sides of 45. I despise seaming & will work my way around it at all costs. Next time I'll figure out a way to do it completely in the round. It took just a little over a skein as I added to the body.

I also liked the look of the stitches from the wrong side so I seamed it inside out & love it!

Here is the finished bag. Nice & room, but the color isn't as lovely as it could be.

And so , as I type, the new & improved bag is drying this lovely dark pink shade resulting from 5 packets of black cherry kool aid. Dyeing was half the fun. I'm going to let the kids get in on it next time. It's really neat to see the wool take in the color so fast. It will be ready to take to the farmer's market the next time we go! Whoopie!

It's always a pleasure to give a little something from the heart when a new little life enters the world, especially when I get to be there. :-) This time in addition to the bonnet & booties, I made a tea cozy. The first time I met this couple we had tea over our meeting & momma was upset because the tea went cold. Well now it won't & it will serve as a constant reminder to the newly expanded family to take a few minutes to slow down, sit back & relax (who can't use that reminder) and to have a tea party from time to time with their new daughter.

These were such fun to make! Thanks to Mochimochiland for the fabulous pattern! This was such a fun & easy pattern to make AND I only used what I had on hand including scrap yarn to stuff the hearts with (which the kids did a great job helping with) and seed beads that weren't my favorite for this at first, but I loved them in the end.

Seamless hearts from Knitter's Delight that I gave to my family. I used the modified pattern & it worked out great!

I may as well contine while I have a moment to breathe. This was the dress I made for my dd for her birthday. I did have to have my mom help me put in the zipper as I had hit my limit for the week & was beyond stressed. She did the hem at the bottom while she was at it. Wouldn't be a crazy trip home unless Mom is there to help me finished an almost finished product. I love how it came out. I was so happy I finally had a project planned & completed for a big event like this. With all these moves it never seems to work out because transition time is so long.

I haven't been as productive as I wish I'd been this year. My entire stash of stuff is now packed again & on it's way back to Germany. But before I left, I made 3 bags. My first try at a more complex bag. Two baby bags & a dance bag. All the same design from Tip Toe Fairy. Husker baby bags for my sister & my sister-in-law. Slightly different so they can tell one from another. My sister gets the one with the shorter Husker outer because my bil is a K-State fan & he might have to carry it once in a while. LOL The skulls is for my dd for dance class. I've been trying to make it all year. Assembly line rocks & so does a drop dead deadline!

Each bag has two sets of inner pockets & a key fob & ring. They also have an outer pocket for water bottles, baby bottles or sippy cups. Narrow whale corduroy outer. The turn-it-all I bought has already paid for itself with this project!

Not too shabby for this momma!!!

Sometimes I wonder how I am even able to function let alone be crafty. Seriously.

I've been working on a newborn set for my new neice who is set to make her appearance in the world in August. We just found out she will be a neice, so I'm using the yarns I got in the magic ball swap for her. A set from LTK, pilot cap, easy peasy cardigan & felted mocs. I did contrasting yarn for the mocs, finished them, threw them in the washer & was putting the final touches on the cardigan. Pulled them out & guess what...come on...you know what's coming...yes, I used leftover SUPERWASH wool yarn. Other than that they felted beautifully. URG!!!!!

I think I'll give them to the parents to be anyway & tell them the real mocs will come later. They are just thrilled to be having a girl so I have to take what I have this weekend. It's the soon to be big brother's 3rd birthday party this weekend. His birthday (today) is the day after mine. Love that!!!

But hey, I get to roll in European wares again soon. We're going Back To Bavaria Baby!!!! It's the Torres European Tour Part Deux!!!

Thrilled & STRESSED

So, guess what, seriously, could be headed back to Germany this summer. It's painfully obvious how much we'd like to be there if you've read other posts of mine (and it's not difficult to go through my archives, there aren't terribly many of them). HOWEVER, I may have to downsize my crafts...fabric, yarn, paper, etc., etc., etc. Oh the pain, oh the agony!! However could I choose what stays & what goes? Why, because most likely we'd be living in housing & it's very, very tiny. It's worth it, I just have to be brave. I just don't see storing it for 3 years.

Otoh, we could end up back in the D.C. area & then it wouldn't matter so much.

Back to downsizing (re: knitting). ;-P

The Alteri Family were our neighbors in Watertown when we lived there in the late 90's. We watched the new bakery be built. We used to walk our dogs through the neighborhood & smell the old bakery as they made the next day's orders. Talk about comfort. I always sent anyone I knew being stationed at Ft. Drum there for some instant love. I miss Saturday morning coffee at the bakery.

So I finally have my tea party yarn in my hands, it may forever be a ufo. Seriously. I did a guage swatch on the way to my parents this weekend & it's sooooooooo off. I mean really off. I am so upset & haven't even tried to do it again. It's ridiculous. I need to get over it & try again.

I don't know why my pics aren't showing up. I'll have to try to fix those in my other spare time.

I did knit up a bunch of felted booties for some very special babies & their parents. I made some gowns too. Once I figure out my pic issue you'll see them, seriously.

Must get on my bellydancing costume the next couple of weeks. Recital is at the end of the month. Pray I don't make a fool of myself.

I put a couple of i-cord piggles on the top too. :-) Haven't even blocked it or washed it or anything yet. Don't know when I will see it again. LOL Dd wore it to school on Friday just in time for crazy hair day. She wore it to ice skating lessons on Saturday. A woman came up to me & asked where I got it. A compliment I desperately needed after the blood, sweat & tears I put into this hat. Many thanks to Amarismama/Amy for holding my hands through those godawful decreases. I love this hat; I hate these decreases.

These two sets above are for a very good friend of mine & for me. The bi-colored ones are for Ulli who knit the scarf in the background for me for Christmas 2 years ago. She made herself the same scarf. I made us coordinating fetching. Hers match perfect, mine coordinate, but I couldn't justify buying more yarn. There is getting to be too much already!

I am a little amazed that I have not been back to update since we first arrived back in the States, but there just seems to be one issue after another.

However, I have almost got my area all put together in the basement so I can do something besides grab a skein of yarn & run back upstairs. My goal is to use as much of what I have as possible before we pack it all back up again next summer. You read that right. Yet another move next year. Such is our life. I would have had the basement finished but that old nemasis tendonitis had a hold on me for almost a month & I've had a slew of stupid injuries since. Slows this old momma down.

It's a whole hour or so from our new house.

This is why I am sitting here just dying...my ds's birthday is in Oct. I'm going to be leaving the house on his birthday to attend my first seminar to begin my journey to become a doula. It's a long intensive weekend seminar. I get to see some good friends & the woman who inspired me & helped me bring my gorgeous little boy into this world is the instructor. This yarn school is the week prior. I would give my eye teeth to go. It looks fabulous. I could even commute if it was absolutely necessary, but dh's job may not be condusive to my attending this workshop the week prior to the doula workshop. I haven't completely ruled it out yet, but I'm not getting my hopes up too high yet. Ya know?

I just found out about the doula seminar recently & dh was all for it. Perhaps if I wait until after we get into the house & settled a bit & then bring it up I may have a better chance of schmoozing into it. It's killing me that it's so close.

That's my pity party for the day.

Toto, we're back in Kansas

To my fellow residents of Kansas, seriously, no offense intended. I'm a Nebraska native. I love the midwest. But am I happy to be here? Absolutely not. At least the trip to get here was not as awful as the trip to Germany 2 years ago was. I had NO problems bringing my knitting on any airplanes (we flew United btw). I did only have plastic & bamboo circulars and no scissors. I brought cotton & wool in my bag so I could just break it. I continued on my mindless washcloth escapade. This is good because I threw out the old, desperately needing to be replaced washies as I finished cleaning in the old house. As of today I have used up all the cotton I packed in the suitcase.

The best news is virtually all of my crafty goodness will be in the new house by Tuesday. Monday most of my fabric, paper and yarn will be there. All my sewing machines will be there by Tuesday. The trick is organizing it into a new space yet again and quickly so I can seriously get back to work again.

I am so ready to be out of hotel rooms. We all are.

I admit it, I couldn't help myself. I had to pick up more sock yarn today. I mean, it's at wally world...you can't just pick it up like that in the States. Now, if that's changed in recent years, then someone need to share the secret with me. It's just so darn easy to get here...not exactly on the cheap side, but great sock yarn is hard to pass up. I think I've knit up enough from the stash to make room for it in the tote. And a little will go in my suitcase too.

And on another note...picked up the BEST bing cherries & strawberries from a roadside stand yesterday. Yummo!!! Saw them at the commissary today & wouldn't touch what they are selling not to mention that they cost so much more there.

The pitfalls of knitting in transition

I chose yarns I thought I would be very productive with and be able to crank out little projects. So far I have been able to do this, but I have run into a wall. I was about to finish Knitty's french market bag. It looks so good so far but I just ran out of yarn at the very last handle. I don't even have enough of the contrasting color to finish it with that & just keep it funky. I KNOW I have more waiting for me on the other side, but it is utter pain having it all but felted. I didn't think out my bags well. ;-( But, on the flip side, the bag I knit & felted for my daughter's friend has been in the classroom every day she's been there. She loves it! The ultimate compliment, use!!

I did find a treasure last night. I was searching for another yarn & found 3 skeins of beautifully dyed BFL that I have no idea when or where I bought it. I don't know if it bought it in Kaiserslautern, or if I bought it here at one of the Christmas markets. I wish I knew...I sure would like to find more before we leave!

Washies everywhere

So this week the exciting thing on the needles are washcloths. So not thrilling, but mindless in the way I need them to be. I was busy all last week sewing up what I could finish on my list before the packers came to take my sewing machines away. I finished a lot, especially for me. For the record, I've finished in roughly the last month or so:

2 spinny skirts for dd
2 peasant tops for dd
3 sets of pj's for ds
solarveil hoodies for both kiddos
3 AB swing bags for their teachers
14 party favor bags (no I'm not crazy enough to invite that many kids, some are destined to become gift bags)
2 travel laundry bags
several many travel shoe bags
3 gowns for a dear friend's baby
several many double sided flannel napkins from scraps left behind
and a replacement pair of ds's favorite reversible pants (he's in heaven again)
and a buncha momma pads (hooray for me)

I was still knitting during that time too, so pretty stinkin' productive for me. I know I've finished 2 baby booties & bonnet sets, one felted bag, a cape for dd, and, of course, washies. Dh downloaded the pics off the camera, onto the computer that was packed yesterday, and away went all my FO's...some are still here so I can take those pics again. Frustrating, though. I spent a lot of time taking all those pictures. I am now down to the laptop, my needles & a tote (yes, I kept a whole tote) of yarn, and some ink, paper, and stamps. I have to get on dd's birthday invites & the thank you cards for her teachers.

Where to knit, where to knit?

It's funny where life takes you. Thought I'd start my new blog with a list of places I've knit in the last year.

Germany
Italy
Poland
France
The Netherlands
and Belgium, if you count the train passing through it. LOL

Unfortunately, I haven't had time to explore these places for any yarn or fabric or anything except for Germany, obviously, and we did hit one fabric store in Poland. Such is life when you are on a tight schedule before things change again. I'm just grateful for the opportunity to be able to explore a little bit of Europe in the short time we are here.
